BMF launch Training awards

Yesterday, the British Marine Federation (BMF) hosted the annual Marine Industry Training Conference, where over 40 delegates from all over the UK (including Cornwall College, Paragon Training and The National Sea Training Centre) listened and engaged on matters around training and careers.

The day started with presentations to set the tone including an update on Diplomas in Engineering and Manufacturing. In September 2008, new diplomas are being introduced in the Engineering area for 14 – 19 year olds and positive discussion took place about Colleges and Industry working more closely to make students aware of the opportunities and to get students ready for these schemes. Martin Bizzell of Golden Arrow Marine and John Percival of Hoylake Sailing School also gave their views from the industry.

The day culminated in working groups on subjects such the Marine Industry Apprenticeships Framework. During the event the BMF launched the Training Awards (formerly Apprenticeship of the Year). The awards are designed to celebrate marine businesses and individuals that demonstrate outstanding business and personal success through investment in training. By recognising this, the awards aim to raise awareness and inspire others to invest in learning and development, which BMF is fully committed to.

The awards are split in to three categories; Small Company Training Award; Large Company Training and Development Award and Trainee/Apprentice of the year Award. Winners will be announced on the 6th March during the BMF Conference, each will receive £500 along with other benefits including media exposure.

Application forms are available on the BMF stand, B001 and in the BMF Membership Lounge.
