Promoting best practice with updated Personal Watercraft guide

A new, updated version of the Managing Personal Watercraft guide is available at the Show. This tool, created by the British Marine Federation (BMF), the RYA (Royal Yachting Association) and the Personal Watercraft Partnership is aimed at harbour authorities, harbour masters and coastguards with the responsibility for managing personal watercraft users.

The publication, originally launched in September 2002, was designed to promote best practice safeguarding recreational use of personal watercraft at the same time as respecting the environment and local amenity and economic interests. This new version has been fully updated to reflect the way in which personal watercraft are managed by users and harbour masters. The publication includes a number of useful, real life examples of both local authorities that have implemented successful initiatives in their regions and schemes developed by user groups.

Rob Stevens, Chief Executive of the British Marine Federation, said, “We are very proud of this updated Personal Watercraft Guide and I urge you to embrace the best practice guidelines to safeguard your region. My thanks go to the RYA and PWP for their contributions too.”

Managing personal watercraftAndrew Norton, RYA Motor Cruising Projects Manager, added, “This updated edition of the Personal Watercraft Guide is designed for local councils and harbour authorities to have a useful, yet simple, guide to managing personal watercraft.” Mark Rowley, Chairman of the PWP, commented “The new guide is 100% up to date and includes practical recommendation as to how well managed PW and their riders can help the environment. The case studies of productive control measures have been in force for over 10 years and are particularly helpful to local councils and harbour authorities. The guide is considered to be the world’s best.”
