Yachting Monthly Crash Test Boat

She’s been called ‘Britain’s most abused boat’ – capsized,
grounded, dismasted, ‘sunk’, set ablaze and blown up in a gas
explosion. Yachting Monthly’s Crash Test Boat series is a
world-first and has certainly exploded a few myths about safety at
sea.
Over a period of 8 months, the magazine tested to
total destruction a 42ft Sun Fizz 40 ketch in a series of eight
controlled disasters, to discover which troubleshooting methods
work best.
No one else has recorded so graphically, on film and in words and
pictures, what happens when calamity strikes out of the blue. In
controlled and monitored experiments yachtsmen can learn how to
avoid and how to cope with disaster at sea.
‘It’s a sort of ‘Top Gear’ afloat, but with life-saving lessons,’
says Editor Paul Gelder. 'The ethos
behind the series is safety, self-reliance and good seamanship.
It’s when things go wrong afloat that we learn our most valuable
lessons. With this series sailors can learn from our mistakes so
they can avoid making their own.’
