The decision to wear a lifejacket is a personal one and the RNLI encourages people to wear them, and then decide when they want to take them off. Most boaters are unaware that an unplanned immersion is not simply a case of getting wet, it can have much more serious ramifications. Here we give some of the background to some newly understood science which leads us to maintain that lifejackets are "useless unless worn".
