Tony started his working life as an apprentice mechanic but
spent much of his time in the auto-electrical shop. Upon qualifying
with first class passes in City & Guilds exams and gaining
sufficient marks in the craft exams to become apprentice of the
year he worked as a mechanic, auto electrician and workshop foreman
for several years. He joined Bushnells of Maidenhead, a major
Thames hire fleet, where he worked as Engineering Foreman until the
demands of his young family made it difficult to give the hire
customers the level of service they were entitled to expect. A
training appointment with the MOD was then followed by a
lectureship at Reading College and TVU.
He pioneered evening courses in boat maintenance in the early 1980s
with Hampshire County Council which lead to him setting up more
practical boaters courses in the maintenance and electrical areas
for Thames Valley University in 2000. These are still running today
in collaboration between TB-Training and River Canal Rescue Ltd.
The online technical support for boaters that Tony introduced to
support the marine students lead to him being asked to undertake
technical support for the readers of Canal Boat Magazine in 1995
which again continues.
Since he was 18 Tony has taken regular boating holidays,
maintained friends’ boats and now has his own narrow boat.
For those who think such things are important, Tony is a Member
of the Institute of Road Transport Engineers, a Member of the
Society of Operations Engineers. He is also a registered Engineer
Technician and holds a number of Training, Educational and
Assessing qualifications.
