Subject: My Olympic Experiences, plus Project Boat

Mark, son of the manager of Hayling Island sailing club, has always sailed since childhood, and standing at 6ft 7 his strength and power served as a huge advantage in keelboat racing.

Eventually choosing to fully pursue his career as a professional sailor, he went on to win many prestigious championships, including the 5.5 metre and Etchells 22 World championships, before teaming up in 1997 with previous Olympian, Glyn Charles, in the Olympic Star Class. Glyn tragically lost his life during the disastrous Sydney to Hobart Race in 1998, but Mark eventually campaigned and won silver alongside Ian Walker, whom had himself lost his team mate and fellow Olympic medallist John Merricks, in a tragic car crash, in 2000.

Mark still races and coaches on an international scale but has also branched out into sailing media, being involved in filming some of the top racing around the world, as well as being “embedded” on top projects to bring the very best footage back from the oceans. Mark is also working on 'The Boat Project' - a project fusing the worlds of art and sports into the community in the spirit of the original Athenian games as part of the Cultural Olympiad for London 2012.
